스물 다섯 살에 죽은 여자에 대해 무슨 말을 할 수 있을까?

그녀는 아름다왔다. 그리고 총명했다. 그녀는 모짜르트와 바하를 사랑했다.

그리고 비틀즈 도, 그리고 나를. 언젠가 한번은 그녀가 나를 그 음악가들과 나란히 열거하길래

나는 그녀 에게 그 순서가 어떻게 되느냐고 물어보았다.

그러자 그녀는 미소를 지으며 "알파벳 순서야."라고 답했다. 그때는 나도 역시 미소를 지었다.

하지만 지금 나는 앉아서 그녀가 나를 나의 이름에 따라서 순서에 넣었을지 -

그럴 경우에는 나는 모짜르트 다음일 것이다 -

아니면 내성(姓)에 따라서였을지 - 그럴 경우에는 나는 바하와 비틀즈 사이에 들어가게 된다 -

궁금하게 여기고 있다. 둘중 어떤 쪽이든지 나는 첫번째에 오질 못하는데

그러한 일은 뭔가 좀 어리석은 이유로 해서 나를 괴롭힌다.

왜냐하면 나는 언제나 첫째라야 한다는 생각 아래 성장해왔기 때문이다. 집안의 전통이 아닐까?

or by my last name, in which case I would edge in there between Bach and the Beatles.

Either way I don't come first, which for some stupid reason bothers hell out of me,

having grown up with the notion that I always had to be number one. Family heritage, don't you know?)-
